On Friday, May 9th, Wexford town had the honour of hosting the Deputy French Ambassador, Armel T'Kint De Roodenbeke. This visit was a significant opportunity for the County Wexford business community to engage directly with the French diplomatic mission and explore avenues to enhance French - Irish relations. 

The meeting, held at the County Wexford Chamber's offices, linked businesses with French connections, including NMB Architects, Danone, Braahmam International, Perennial Freight, and members of the Wexford Normandy Cultural Association. The event was also attended by County Wexford Chamber CEO Paula Roche and President Conor Robinson, alongside representatives from Wexford County Council’s Senior Economic Development Officer Angela Lawless, and the Honorary Consul of France in Wexford, Melanie O'Reilly. Chris Smyth, Group CEO of Perennial Freight, is also President of the France-Ireland Chamber of Commerce.

  1. Cultural, Historical, and Trade Links: Emphasis was placed on building and strengthening the existing cultural and historical ties between France and Ireland. The upcoming Year of the Normans in 2027, a pan-European event involving Ireland, the UK, Sicily, Flanders, and Scandinavia, was highlighted as a significant milestone. Wexford County Council is set to lead a Norman Forum to promote events to highlight Wexford’s connections, including The Norman Way. 

  1. Shipping Links: The growth of shipping links between Rosslare Europort and France was a major topic. Enhancing these connections is seen as vital for boosting trade and economic cooperation. 

  1. Trade Missions: The potential for developing trade missions between France and Ireland was explored, with a focus on mutual benefits and opportunities for businesses in both regions. 

  1. Cross-Promotion: There was a discussion on the cross-promotion of Wexford and France through the ports, aiming to increase visibility and economic activity in both regions.

  1. Irish EU Presidency: The opportunities presented by Ireland's upcoming presidency of the EU in the second half of 2026 were discussed, with a focus on leveraging this position to strengthen bilateral relations. 

  1. VIE French International Internship Programme: This programme was highlighted as an ideal opportunity for companies based in France and present in Ireland, as well as for French entrepreneurs in Ireland looking to recruit talented individuals.
