Summary of the Valuation System and National Revaluation Programme

Working with the Valuation Office, Chambers Ireland has put together a summary which aims to assist Chambers and their members in the understanding of the Valuation System and National Revaluation Programme which is currently undertaking a revaluation of all rateable properties in Ireland. The attached summary provides brief information including the role of the Valuation Office, reasons why rates increase and how to appeal a valuation.

The purpose of a revaluation is to bring more equity, uniformity, fairness and transparency into the local authority rating system resulting in a more equitable distribution of commercial rates among ratepayers. Following revaluation there will be a much closer relationship between the rental value or valuation of a property and its commercial rates liability.

Neither residential property nor agricultural lands are rateable and consequently are not affected by the revaluation.

The programme has already been completed in the Carlow, Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown, Fingal, Kildare, Kilkenny, Leitrim, Longford, Offaly, Roscommon, Sligo, South Dublin and Westmeath County Councils and in Dublin City Council, Waterford City and County Council and Limerick City and County Council rating authority areas. A second revaluation of the South Dublin county council rating authority area was completed in 2017.

Revaluation 2019 will result in the revaluation of commercial and industrial properties in Cavan, Louth, Meath, Monaghan, Tipperary, Wexford and Wicklow County Councils. The Fingal County Council Rating Authority area will undergo a second Revaluation having initially been the subject of a Revaluation in 2009.

The All Ireland Business Summit takes place in Croke Park on Thursday 19 April.  At the event, 21 awards will be presented, including the “All Star Use of Irish Language Award 2018”, see here for details:

Applications will be accepted until  Monday 19 February.  If your business provides services through Irish or uses Irish language on signage, packaging, company website, social media, etc. you are advised to submit an application so that your business can be considered for the award.

InterTradeIreland Breakfast Briefings & Go2Tender

InterTradeIreland, in partnership with the Office of Government Procurement, Ibec, SFA, ISME, CIF and Chambers Ireland are delivering a series of breakfast workshops to educate and engage businesses on the island around public procurement, a market worth in the region of €12 billion per annum.

Following the first Breakfast Briefing in the series at the end of January, the next Breakfast Briefing is taking place on Wednesday, 28 February 2018 at Granville Hotel, Waterford and is hosted in partnership with Waterford Chamber and is now available to register for by following this link.

European Movement Ireland – Citizens’ Dialogue on the Future of Europe, featuring Minister of State for European Affairs, Helen McEntee TD in Cork

The latest Citizen’s Dialogue in the Future of Europe series, will be taking place in County Cork, organized by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and European Movement Ireland, Ireland’s oldest European-affairs-focused organisation. The event will take place on Thursday, 22 February 2018 from 5.30pm at Cork County Hall, Carrigrohane Road, County Cork.

In attendance will be Minister of State for European Affairs, Helen McEntee TD.

Peninsula: Retirement Age Policy Considerations Guidance Documents

We have received a number of enquiries in relation to the Retirement Age that is stated in contracts of employment, particularly in light of the Government’s intentions to defer entitlement to the State Pension to the age of 68 in due course. In response to this issue, Peninsula has put together two documents which are attached:

  • a briefing note which acts as a guidance on drafting a policy on retirement age which may be of use to your members in drafting contracts of employment


  • an overview note of the Code of Practice on Retirement Age (Longer Working) by the Work Place Commission, which offers further context and guidance for drafting a retirement age policy

In summary, their recommendation is that employers consider including the standard age for retirement as 68 in their contracts of employment.
